John has had a solicitor’s practice since earning his law degree at the University of Alberta in 1993. Before that he worked in senior management at a large hospital in Halifax following obtaining his Master’s in Public Administration degree at Dalhousie University.
He started his practice at a large downtown firm, then called Field & Field Perraton (now Field Law). After articling and working 3 years as an associate, mainly in corporate/commercial, he left to start a firm on Edmonton’s south side in Weber Centre. From 1998 to 2021, his office has been in Weber Centre. The firms have had a variety of names, including: “Richards Wood Toogood”, “Richards Hunter Toogood” and “McGee Richard Toogood LLP”. In 2022 he joined Roger Stephens and Kevin Mah in their offices in First Edmonton Place, downtown, to create “Stephens Mah Toogood”.
Over many years, his focus has been on helping families and small/medium business owners with their legal needs: real estate transactions (residential and commercial), estate planning (preparing Wills) and estate administration (probating Wills and advising Executors) and corporate & commercial transactions and leasing.
In recent years, his practice focuses on two main areas:
-
helping people with preparing Wills and advising executors about handling estates. This has taken on a greater significance as his clients increasingly face these situations.
-
advising in the charity and not-for-profit sector. John has worked closely for many years with W. Laird Hunter, K.C., whose practice has long focused on charity and not-for-profit law. Together, they assist organizations in Alberta and across Canada with CRA compliance (including initial charity registrations), incorporation and corporate matters at both the provincial and federal levels, and advising on bylaws, corporate structure, reorganizations, governance, social enterprise, and the like.
Long standing clients and new referred clients regularly call on John for advice and help in their family/personal and business/organizational endeavours.
Laird Hunter K.C is recognized as a leader in charity law in Canada. His work and support for these organizations has gained him recognition nationwide. His involvement with The Muttart
Foundation and The Pemsel Case Foundation are examples of the many pro bono projects he has been involved in. He intervened in two high-profile cases involving charity law at the Supreme Court of Canada. His peers consistently give him high ratings.
For more than 45 years, Laird has been advising on charity and not-for-profit law. He and John Toogood collaborate closely to advise organizations and other lawyers in Alberta and in every province and territory in Canada.
A typical day could involve questions and advice about:
-
Adapting to changes in charity and not-for-profit laws and CRA policies.
-
Offering guidance on following CRA requirements, particularly during an audit.
-
Helping a new organization register as a charity.
-
Reading and helping to create better bylaws.
-
Identifying structural and policy issues to aid organizations in operating efficiently.
-
Helping boards of directors and executive directors fulfil their roles and
-
responsibilities.
If Laird or John can help, please get in touch with them.
